What is Naturopathic Medicine? Naturopathic Medicine (or naturopathy) is a medical system that focuses on the body’s vitalistic ability to heal and maintain itself. Naturopathic philosophy favors a holistic approach, in conjunction with finding the least invasive measures necessary for symptom improvement or resolution, thus encouraging minimal use of surgery and unnecessary drugs. Naturopathic physicians practice according to the six fundamental principles of naturopathic medicine:
- The Healing Power of Nature

Meet the Doctor. When Dr. Shonna Christian, Holistic Medicine Practitioner and Zest Natural Medicine owner, was really young, her father was an EMT. The family lived in a very rural area in the middle of nowhere. So when Dr. Christian’s father would get called out, sometimes she would get to go on calls with him and ride in the back of the ambulance. She would always look at his EMT books, and that was what sparked her fascination with the human body.
Dr. Christian actually wanted to be a pediatric trauma surgeon. Then she had an injury in the early two thousands. Based on her care, she decided she didn’t want to be a doctor because it was just very poor, and she didn’t want to treat people that way. Instead, Dr. Christian got her undergraduate degree in microbiology, but she had also gotten a second degree in psychology, completely on accident just because she kept taking courses because she was interested in the subject.
A Career Path Change. Rather than applying to medical school, Dr. Christian applied for a master’s program in health psychology, and it was actually her mentor that she was doing research under that handed her the brochure for the naturopathic school. Dr. Christian’s mentor knew that she always wanted to be a doctor, but he suggested she look into this. Dr. Christian took this advice and looked into the naturopathic program and what it entailed and how it was different from traditional medicine. This career path really resonated with Dr. Christian, so she ended up applying to the program. Once she got accepted, she loved it!
In her profession, Dr. Christian loves being able to take the time to actually help people feel better. She looks for the cause of what’s causing people to feel poorly, not just giving them a medication to cover up a symptom. For that reason, Dr. Christian says it’s a lot more involved and a lot more time consuming. She likens her job to playing a detective. Dr. Christian also thinks that’s where the psychology part comes into play because there’s a lot of mind and body connections that people don’t really think about it. That is, however, a large component of her focus—the mind and the body and how those two correlate.
Integrative Medicine for All Ages. Dr. Christian is a primary care doctor, so she sees clients of all ages, but she focuses a lot with middle-aged women. For that reason, she encounters a lot of weight loss, a lot of nutritional, and a lot of bio identical hormones issues. Dr. Christian also does conventional medicine, as well. For example, she has some patients that take medication. If they’re on a medication or two and they’re stable on it, and they prefer to stay on it, she has no problem monitoring them with that.
However, if a patient is looking to get off the medication, then Dr. Christian helps with that as well through supplements, dietary lifestyle changes, etc. She says she has some clients come in and they may be on 20 medications, and she helps get them down to two. Dr. Christian says she is very integrative. She feels she sees the best of both worlds, and she thinks that there’s a time and a place for medicine. What’s more, there’s a time and a place for an emergency room.
Caring for You AND Your Health. Dr. Christian shares that she genuinely cares about people’s health, but she adds, “I can’t care more than the patient. I want people that care about their health, not just looking for a pill to feel better. Because I put a lot of time into my new patients. I go above and beyond for my patients. I just want them to care as much about their health as I do.”
