Meet the Owner: Jean Ann Schaner, originally from the Philippines, studied education before later earning a Masters in Health Administration. Always wanting to start a home health care business of her own, Schaner’s career in the United States began as a care giver. Instead of accepting a full-time teaching position, Schaner did short-term substitute teaching because her focus was on eventually managing her own care home.
When the Avondale home came up for sale, Schaner purchased it because it was a turnkey business. Then she built Twilight Haven Assisted Living from the ground up. Schaner strives for a “home feel,” not institutional in any way. For example, nice curtains frame the windows, and residents have their family pictures hanging on the walls. Schaner is committed to making Twilight Haven feel like home because, for the residents, it is their home now.
According to Schaner, families of residents who pass away often return to visit, mentioning how grateful they were for the care their loved ones received. One family member even bought Christmas presents for the current residents!
Schaner once worked at an agency and says her newest Twilight Haven resident is a former patient from there. He moved from Scottsdale to Mesa to be with Schaner after trying three other homes that he couldn’t wait to get out of. Now he doesn’t want to be anywhere other than Twilight Haven Assisted Living.
