Roll for Fun! Established in 2004, Maracaba Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is dedicated to teaching martial arts to both children (ages 4 and up) and adults of all age levels and athletic abilities.
The classes at Maracaba BJJ are designed to reach the understanding of the youngest students to the oldest. All instruction contains the same basic BJJ Fundamentals, no matter the age or experience level. This works extremely well, whether one is new to martial arts or an advanced team member.

All Abilities Welcome! The art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brings techniques that involve submissions, take downs, escapes, and defense. All ability levels learn how to move and control their body to their own advantages. Each individual learns how to use and manipulate their strengths and weaknesses. This helps students improve upon their coordination, strengths, fitness, and athleticism, while controlling their weakness. This is all done by using self-control and discipline, no matter the physical limitations.
Boys & Girls. Both boys and girls train in the same class. This provides many benefits within the course that goes beyond Jiu-Jitsu. It also allows opportunities for girls and boys to learn to stand up to bullies, learn how to respect one another, and learn how to treat each other. Respect and discipline are always a constant theme during jiu-jitsu training!
Team Spirit. Maracaba’s BJJ team spirit is so much more than willingness to cooperate as part of a team. Everyone treats each other as family—by helping, learning, teaching, and growing together. Everyone enjoys watching each other improve and continually grow along the way. At Maracaba BJJ, they are family and pride themselves on loyalty and being there for one another, whether it’s just training or cheering each other on at the tournaments.
As a very family-centered culture, some kids and their parents both take lessons and watch each other’s training sessions. Maracaba BJJ also makes martial arts fun. For example, on tournament trips, they all go out to eat together. And there’s end-of-year parties and more!
A Winning Team. Maracaba BJJ’s adult team is #1 in the Arizona state competition. The kids’ team took second. Maracaba BJJ competes against much larger gyms and wins. While Maracaba BJJ is a competitive gym, you don’t have to compete if you don’t want to.
Meet the Owner: Coach Andre has been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for 26 years. At just three years old, he began doing Judo, then Jui-Jitsu at twelve years old. Coach Andre is now a fourth degree black belt.
At Maracaba Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Coach Andre is the one who coaches you—you get the expertise of the owner! Coach Watson is his assistant. He is a black belt and has trained under Andre since he was 12 years old. Coach Watson fills in for Coach Andre when necessary, but Andre instructs 90 percent of classes.
Everyone is Welcome with Open Arms. At Maracaba Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Coach Andre listens to each student individually. If you want to be a competitor, he will make you one. If you want to do Jiu-Jitsu for fitness, Coach Andre will help you with that too. Maracaba Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is like a big, extended family. The results are great!
