An Exciting Indoor Playground. Makutu’s Island is one of Arizona’s largest indoor play destinations. The centerpiece of the island is its 25-foot indoor oak tree. Filled with tunnels, tubes, mole holes, fire poles, and slides, the magnificent tree offers hours of fun and adventure. Around the tree’s perimeter, guests will find animals carved within its extensive roots and a comical three-animal totem pole. Within the majestic tree, the “banana” slide is a sure thrill as it starts 25 feet into the air and winds more than 35 feet around the outside of the tree to its base.

After exploring the tree, many of Makutu’s guests find themselves in one of the three adjoining play structures, including the Blue Fantasy Tree, Pirates Cove, and Palm Slide. Less rigorous than the big oak tree, these areas are perfect for the less-experienced island travelers and feature tunnels, caves, and a zip tracker!

In addition to Makutu’s four main play areas, the island also offers its smaller guests a special toddler’s area. Oscar’s Lagoon is a slower placed environment for Makutu’s smallest “castaways.” In the Lagoon, toddlers will enjoy three small slides and soft foam blocks.

Traditional Family Entertainment, Too! Makutu’s Island is very unique—there’s nothing like it in the entire valley! Parents will join the kids as they explore all the island has to offer. For families looking for something different than trampoline parks and bounce houses, this is it!

Makutu’s Island does offer traditional entertainment, as well. Things start to heat up within The Inferno, a fiery volcano that is home to the island’s video arcade. There, guests can try their luck on a selection of some of the “hottest” games available.

Makutu’s Island also proudly boasts the Jungle Jamboree Theatre—home to storytelling, crafts, and educational venues. The theatre is currently featuring “Shake, Rattle, and Roll,” a hands-on discovery into Polynesian music and island dancing. When it is time for lunch or a snack, The Under-the-Sea Café, provides a full menu with many family favorites, all within a fanciful undersea-themed environment.

Fun-loving New Friends. Makutu means “magic” in the Polynesian language of Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. Group Events. Makutu’s Island is also a great location for hosting group events. They work with your group to customize the event to meet your needs and offer flexible options. Previous group events have included Field Trips, Camps, Client Appreciation Events, & Fundraisers.

Know Before You Go. Makutu’s Island is dedicated to promoting fun in a safe environment. As such, Safety Recommendations include:

• Attire—For children, long sleeve shirts and pants are recommended to avoid burns going down the slides. Socks are required.

• For children 5 years and under—Parents should accompany the child(ren) through the play areas.

• Children under 3—Younger guests may enjoy quieter weekdays and the designated Toddler Area.

• Guardians must remain in the building at all times; children CANNOT be dropped off at the facility unless they are participating in (and registered for) a seasonal camp.

Meet the Owner: Makutu’s Island owner, Kiran Vedancam, and his family have always been big Disney fans. When Disney decided to sell it five years ago, Vedancam jumped at the opportunity to buy it. Disney originally built it as a retail shop. The Vedancams repackaged it for entertainment, not just merchandise.

After purchasing the business, Vedancam and his family made many improvements. They turned it from a store into a family fun center, adding the arcade, bungee, all-inclusive birthday party packages, and a lot more. They also provide opportunities for school field trips and fundraising. Today, Makutu’s Island is a family fun center like no other!
