• Trees don’t belong in the desert, so they need more attention. It’s true! And do you want to know how a tree feels? Put your bare feet in the dirt. They won’t go down very far because the soil is so hard. Your feet will also get really hot. That’s what happens to the trees here in the southwest.
• The winds in Arizona blow really hard at times. Proper pruning allows the tree to resist those winds. A tree is like a sailboat—the harder the wind blows, the less sail it can tolerate before it tips over.
• Soil, water, aeration, and pruning are equally necessary for a healthy tree.
• Just because your trees look good doesn’t mean they are good! Trees don’t show hurt for 12 or 15 years. You must take care of your trees NOW if you want to keep them!
• The objective is to prevent stress and disease that can take your tree out years from now. Trees will live far longer than you and I, but not in the desert if you don’t take care of them correctly.
• Proper fertilization must be done with a machine that probes 10 inches below ground and injects water and nutrients. It opens soil, waters it, and provides macro nutrients—all at the same time.
• A tree needs three main components: water, food, and oxygen. Deep root feeding does that.
• It really is a minimal expense to maintain proper tree health. Unfortunately. people usually call when their tree is already in crisis mode. It’s far better to spend a small amount of money in a maintenance role than to spend a lot later in an effort to save a sick tree.
• Proper watering is essential! A couple of remitters—one on each side of the tree—is simply not enough. Think of the root ball like a 5-foot diameter pizza. Only two slices are getting any water. What’s happening to the other 8?
