How it Began. Baldy Mesa Cycle owner, John Hooper, spent 50 years working for others in the welding and fabrication industry while operating Baldy Mesa Cycles as a side business. A master machinist, toolmaker, welder, and fabricator, John also owns and operates JHK Welding (https://jhkweld.com/).
“I love repairing motorcycles or helping somebody with a project that they’re working on.” When John was working for a fabrication company in California, he worked on motorcycles in the evenings and on weekends. However, when he came to Arizona ten years ago, he looked at the job market and realized that, for a man with his skill set and age, there wasn’t a lot of job options. Thus, he decided to try self-employment and has been running Baldy Mesa Cycle full time ever since.

Trusted Service. John is also the Arizona distributor for McWelco tool boxes, and he knows the product line well, as he built them when he worked there for 13 years. What’s more, John also did aerospace work, and he had a production CNC shop specializing in aerospace parts. But John’s love has always been bikes. He likes everything about them. In his own words, “Motorcycles are just so cool.” He also loves the fact that motorcycles take a lot less time to build than cars. For example, a car restoration can take up to a year’s worth of man hours before it’s done! Yet a motorcycle can be built from the ground up, including the frame, in only 10 to 12 weeks. John doesn’t bill by the hour either. You’ll get a quote for the finished price, out the door before the work starts. And that figure includes a lot of custom parts like sprocket carriers and brake disk carriers. In fact, everything is custom made in-house and is top-quality!
John also builds custom motorcycle engines, like the Yamaha 650 twin that is currently waiting for a frame to reside in. This particular Yamaha is making close to 100 horsepower! John says, “I love everything about messing with bikes.” That means he also works on dirt bikes, too! So if someone has a project going on and they want some help, John can probably help that person. Plus, if they’ve got a problem and can’t figure out what’s wrong, John can help them with that as well. Moreover, John works on all makes and models. He works on Harleys all the time.
John finds that a lot of problems are simply caused by letting the bike sit too long with regular pump gas in it. A lot of times, when you try to start the bike, it simply won’t run. John says, “Bring it over. I can fix it.” John can even handle simple jobs. For example, the other day a man called John because his clutch lever was stiff. John advised the man to bring his bike over. After John lubed the clutch cable, it worked fine. For John, simple jobs like that are just as much fun as a total engine rebuild or more complex jobs.
