Comedy Schools. If you want to learn how to be a better stand-up comic, are searching for a new hobby, or just want to be a better speaker, there’s a school that can help you achieve all of these goals! Enroll in Comedy Schools in Gilbert, Arizona!
How it Began. Comedy Schools owner, Tony Vicich, was a full-time stand-up comic starting in 1986. He even toured the country from 1986 to 2000, almost non-stop. Tony also did a bunch of television shows back in those days, on networks like Showtime and Comedy Central. Plus, Tony produced a number of shows himself, like stand-up specials for The Nashville Network.
Tony bought a comedy club in 2000-2001. He originally started the business in San Diego before coming to Arizona. Today, Comedy Schools has been in continuous operation for 20 years!
Comedy Success. Comedy Schools has had many successful students, some going all the way from their very first workshop to national television, like the Tonight Show and Showtime. Comedy Schools also helps writers and actors. One young man went all the way from his very first class with Comedy Schools to being a regular on The Walking Dead.
Workshops. Comedy Schools has two primary workshops. They offer a beginning stand-up comedy workshop that teaches people the basic tools and curriculum, like how to write, rehearse, and perform stand-up comedy.
For those who desire to continue, there’s an advanced course where you learn how to apply these tools and create an entire comedy set. There’s even a showcase show that’s normally held at JP’S comedy club. Comedy Schools will have people who have been ongoing long-term students go so they can keep their skills sharp. In a sense, it’s like going to the gym. You can work out for six months and achieve your goals, but if you quit, you’ll lose everything you had achieved. So many individuals use Comedy Schools like their gym so that they can maintain their comedy and acting skills.
Comedy Schools does online classes as well!
Classes. Some individuals may wonder, “How do you teach stand-up comedy?” What you’re really doing is combining a writing class and a performance class. Jokes are closer to an advertisement than anything else. You have to grab you audience’s attention in 15-30 seconds. It’s the same scenario with stand-up, as you have a series of jokes and you must gain the audience’s attention quickly. Comedy Schools will teach a “writing style” style of writing and then a performance class that will help students stand on stage without looking “like a deer in the headlights.” When you combine a writing AND performance class, voila—you have stand-up comedy!
When you’re on stage, you want everyone in the room to have a good time. Envision that there’s a party at your house, and you’re the host. You want everyone in attendance to enjoy the party and, if all goes well, they’ll tell their friends and maybe come back the next time you’re there. Stand-up comedy is much the same.
Tony says that he enjoys the teaching aspect of Comedy Schools. He likes it when he has a new student he’s been working with and, all of the sudden, you’ll see a light come on. The student took a key joke that makes them understand how joke writing works and “they’re off to the races.” Or the student might exhale a little bit on stage, breathe, and then get comfortable being on stage. Now they’re living the very reason they thought they wanted to become a comic.
Classes for Everyone! Most people who attend Comedy Schools aren’t trying to make a career out of stand-up comedy. There are even salespeople in Comedy Schools’ classes who might say, “This really helped me with my sales presentations.” There have even been DJs who’ve taken Comedy Schools’ course. Greg Paul, the news director for AM 550, even took a class at Comedy Schools. Other students have said that they want to get out of their house but aren’t athletic—so comedy is their hobby.
Most of the time, students at Comedy Schools are just interested in comedy for the sake of being interested in it. Time and time again, Comedy Schools has had people comment on how much the class help with their sales, job, and interpersonal communication.
Even if you only have to make one speech in your life, Comedy Schools has classes for you! You don’t want to be the person who gives a toast at a wedding but does it poorly. The stand-up comedy workshops can help you in all aspects of your business and personal life.
