Good Job! Want to know how you’re progressing in class? East Mesa Karate mails out “good job cards.” These reports tell the student what they are excelling at and congratulates them as they progress. Each student will receive at least one card every 90 days. Over 450 cards are mailed out every 90 days, and they are all personally handwritten by the instructors.
A Community Partner. East Mesa Karate is very involved in the community. They visit area schools and meet the staff members and kids. They also offer a scholarship program to help low-income kids and their families afford the classes.
Meet the founder: East Mesa Karate was founded by Tom Baker, Senior. Tom worked in Gilbert for a window company and was doing well, but he always wanted to start his own business. He began signing his own kids up for Karate classes to help them with discipline. They stuck with it, and one day Tom decided to start his own Karate school. He rented a suite and started by purchasing a franchise. Five years later, Tom broke away from the franchise because they were more about the money than helping the kids. That’s when Tom founded East Mesa Karate.
Tom has been in the Karate business for 22 years, and owned his own business for 15 of those years. Today, East Mesa Karate is one of the biggest Karate schools in the country, with nearly 500 students enrolled. They have as many black belts now as they had students in the beginning.
Tom’s sons, John and Thomas Junior, both teach and help run the business. Tom Senior’s two oldest sons are not only martial arts instructors, but they are both John Maxwell and Zig Ziglar certified life coaches.

East Mesa Karate Reviews
“The instructors here are amazing. They quickly pick up on what each student needs and tailor their classes to help every student be successful. My son has a lot of energy and gets distracted easily. They have worked so hard with him and the results are astounding. My husband and I also joined and love it as well. I tell everyone about East Mesa Karate. It is one of the best decisions we have made for our family.”—Kathy M.
“The instructors are amazing! I love the sense of commrodory and and the values that are taught in addition to the karate itself. My son absolutely loves all of his classes.”—Cynthia B.
“East Mesa Karate has done an incredible job leading my son from day 1! This is so much more than a karate school. The Baker’s are an amazing group of people who genuinely care about their students. They go above and beyond to acknowledge each student, taking time to support each of them. There has never been a day in the 6 months we have been there that we were never welcomed by a smile, a handshake and by name. (There’s a ton of names too. Parents and kids) I’m a hard person to impress and I can say that yes, I am very impressed. Keep up the great work you are all doing! If anyone is looking to learn about martial arts and so much more, East Mesa Karate is the place to go!”—Cheston B.
“My son has been here for almost a year now. I have noticed a huge improvement in his behavior and focus. Both at home and at school. He has learned that it is cool to respect others. Most of all he is self confident and having fun! I highly recommend East Mesa Karate! You ROCK!!”—George B.
“This is a great karate school, great instructors. They teach self discipline and self confidence. Highly recommend to anyone, any age.”—Melissa W.
