“It’s Your Money – Spend It In Mesa.”
Spay it Forward! Altered Tails is Arizona’s largest non-profit spay and neuter clinic. With facilities located in Mesa and in Phoenix, their mission is to provide accessible and affordable, high-quality spay/neuter services for companion animals and free roaming cats.
As a high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter clinic, Altered Tails is capable of managing a large number of sterilizations at a time, similar to outpatient surgical centers for humans. Yet, they maintain low-cost services—on average, 75% less than traditional providers.
Altered Tails’ Vision: To eliminate euthanasia as a means of animal population control!
Services Offered:
• Spay/Neuter—Cat spay and neuter. Dog spay and neuter, with cost based on animal’s weight. Altered Tails also partners with rescue organizations, providing surgeries to ensure an animal is sterile before it is adopted by its new family. Last year, 19,000 sterilizations were performed at their clinics!
• Vaccinations—Individual vaccinations are available, like Bordetella Vaccine for dogs or FeLV (Feline Leukemia) Vaccine for cats. Or you may opt for a Dog Package or Cat Package that combines several vaccines for one affordable price.
• Extras—Pain Medication, Pre-Surgical Bloodwork, Microchip Protection, E-Collar (Cone Collar), Deworming, Unattached Dewclaw Removal, and Nail Trims.
Why Spay and Neuter? There are many benefits to having your pet spayed or neutered, including Healthier Pets, Better Behavior, Avoiding the “Heat” Cycle, Less Risk of Roaming, Highly Cost Effective, Helps Your Community, and Shows Responsibility for Your Pet. Finally, because millions of dogs and cats are euthanized annually, or suffer needlessly as strays, choosing to have your pet spayed and neutered helps fight pet overpopulation!
TNR Program. Do you have a stray or outdoor cat that you want to help? Then Altered Tail’s TNR program is your answer!
What is TNR? Simply put, T=Trap. You or a volunteer will use a humane TruCatch trap to catch the cat. N= Neuter (or spay). The trapped cat is brought to a clinic where the cat will be “fixed” and given a left ear tip, the universal identifier as the outdoor cat being fixed. R= Return. After surgery, the cats are returned to the original colonies’ location where caregivers will continue to provide food and water.
Why is TNR Best?
• Ends the breeding cycle and stabilizes the population
• More effective and less expensive than extermination
• Eliminates or minimizes annoying behaviors such as spraying, yowling, and fighting
• Helps end the suffering of unwanted, homeless cats
• Reduces euthanasia due to the number of kittens flooding the already overburdened shelters.
In the Beginning: Altered Tails’ journey began in 2003 with a mission of providing affordable and accessible spay and neuter services. They first offered services through a mobile clinic that traveled to the poorest communities in the metro Phoenix area where many residents had no means of transportation.
In 2007, local philanthropists Bea and Dick Barnhart donated the building at 950 W. Hatcher Road, honoring their love for Princess and their passion for spay and neuter. Their generosity helped open the Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic, the first stationary clinic. The doors to the new clinic opened in 2009 and by 2012, Altered Tails had become the first and only Humane Alliance-certified clinic in Arizona. Spay and neuter surgeries topped 8,000 annually.
The Mesa clinic opened in 2013 to expand the reach of services. The W.A.G.S. (Wheels for Animals Getting Spayed/Neutered) program was launched a year later, designed to provide transport assistance for pet owners who lack the means of getting the animal to the clinic for surgery.
Today, Altered Tails provides services for owned pets, rescue organizations preparing their animals for adoption, and groups practicing Trap Neuter Return with free-roaming cats. Since 2003, more than 200,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized by Altered Tails!

Altered Tails in Mesa AZ Reviews
“I took my 2 and a half year old chipoo here to get neutered and am so glad that I found this place! They took such good care of him and were very friendly at drop off and pick up! They were so helpful with offering advice and with the aftercare instructions as well! I don’t take leaving my furbabies at places lightly and highly recommend Altered Tails! The saying “You get what you pay for” is so not true for Altered Tails. They are so affordable but the care and kindness are superb! I will be back to get Kittie done soon!” – Jen N.
“Loved the flow of the process and especially the Altered Tails staff! At drop off, the staff did an efficient and caring check in. I felt at ease leaving my fur baby with them. They said they were aiming for four for the pick up time, but would call if he was going to be done any sooner. When I went to pick him up, the staff were amazing. The front desk person went over the aftercare and extra pain killer instructions. The man that brought out my dog was incredibly nice. He gave my dog scratches and helped while I put on the cone, offered to give me a towel for my car, and helped me carry my dog out to my car. The staff was so kind, caring, and compassionate! It made for a great experience.” – Lailani N.
“The staff was fantastic with both my dogs today! A spay, a neuter, shots and chips for both were 200.00. Thank you Altered Tails for all you do and providing affordable vet care.” – Michelle C.
“This place is awesome! I took my 3 year old German Shepherds to get spayed and paid under $50.00! That was including pain peds, deworming and rabbis shot. The staff was great and even tho my dog is agressive they didn’t hesitate or charge me extra like other places I’ve called. the Vet took the time to talk to me and explain everything due to her size(96lbs) but everything went well and as soon as surgery was over, i got a call to let me know she was fine. They knew i was nervous, they were all so kind. When i picked her up the guy that brought her out was so loving and caring with her. I’m definitely goind back to take my male dog. I love this place!” – Belen F.
“Took my Great Dane Mastiff in to be fixed and put a microchip in. Of course Cash was anxious because what pet wouldn’t be. The tech let me walk with him into the room to calm him down. The techs explained the process really well as well as the after care process and what needs to be done at home. Surgery went actually pretty fast and they were done sooner than expected. I’d recommend this low cost facility to any pet parents who are looking to get their fur baby taken care of.” – Colie Q.
